Seed producers became worried about being arrested for selling these flowers with the name, Opium Poppies.

So renaming them Breadseed Poppies made them sound safer from being questioned by the Poppy Patrols.

Eating a poppy seed dessert could possibly cause a drug test to be positive for opium.

I love the Seinfeld episode when Elaine eats some poppy seed muffins.  She needs a physical for a pending trip with her boss.  Her test comes back with a positive result for opium and her boss fires her.  This was one of seven episodes that happened in real life.

This federal offense was once compared to ripping the tags off of pillows and mattresses “under penalty of law.”

My husband’s Wisconsin relatives were one of many families that sold home grown poppy seeds.  The Poppy Patrol put a stop to many of these seed growing businesses.

Now we buy most poppyseeds for baking from foreign countries.

As a new bride, I believed the story about a successful marriage being directly linked to the husband’s contented stomach.

My mother-in-law shared with me, what has become our favorite poppyseed dessert.

Whether this poppyseed torte has contributed to a euphoria of contented married life for 50+ years could be debatable.  What do you think?

This easy recipe only uses two bowls to mix the ingredients. Filling can be cooked on the stove, but watch carefully. I prefer cooking the filling in the microwave.
Ingredients
  • Crust:
  • 1¼ cup Graham Crackers, crushed
  • ½ cup Butter, melted
  • ¾ cup Flour
  • ½ cup Walnuts, crushed
  • Cooked Filling:
  • 5 Egg Yolks, large
  • 2 tablespoons Cornstarch
  • 1 cup Sugar
  • 2 cups Milk
  • ¼ cup Poppyseeds
  • ¼ teaspoon Salt
  • Add to Filling:
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla
  • 1 package Unflavored Gelatin softened in ¼ Cup Water
  • 2nd Filling Mixture:
  • 5 Egg Whites
  • ½ teaspoon Cream of Tartar
  • ½ cup Sugar
  • Whipped Cream topping (optional)
Instructions
  1. Crust: Crush graham crackers and walnuts.
  2. Stir in melted butter and flour.
  3. Pat into bottom of 13 x 9 inch pan.
  4. Bake for 15 minutes @ 350 degrees.
  5. Filling: Mix egg yolks, cornstarch, sugar, milk, poppyseeds, salt into large bowl and microwave until thickened, approximately 15 minutes.
  6. Stir filling every 5 minutes.
  7. Cool filling to room temperature.
  8. Then add vanilla and softened gelatin.
  9. Beat egg whites until very stiff.
  10. Then add tartar and sugar.
  11. Fold this into cooked filling.
  12. Chill.
  13. Whipped Cream topping is optional.

I found a rhubarb recipe, that I couldn’t resist trying.  But first, I couldn’t resist tweaking the Rhubarb Crisp Reciperecipe to the point of not even resembling the original version.

If you aren’t crazy about the tartness of rhubarb, you’ll love this sweeter combination of apples, strawberries, and of course the rhubarb.  Please share your favorite rhubarb recipe.

 

Rhubarb Crumb Torte

Ingredients
  • CRUST
  • 2 ready made pie crusts
  • FRUIT
  • 5 cups rhubarb
  • 1 peeled and finely chopped apple
  • 2 cups sliced strawberries or 1 cup frozen blueberries
  • FILLING
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • ¼ teaspoon cinnamon
  • 3 tablespoons water
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • CRUMB TOPPING
  • ¾ cup all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup rolled oats
  • ⅓ cup brown sugar
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon cinnamon
  • ⅛ teaspoon nutmeg
  • ⅓ cup shortening or margarine
Instructions
  1. Preheat oven at 400 degrees.
  2. Spread the 2 ready made pie crusts into a 9 x 13 inch pan. With a fork, poke holes in crust and bake at 400 degrees for 10 minutes or until crust is lightly browned.
  3. Reduce oven temperature to 350 degrees.
  4. For the filling, in a large bowl, mix together the sugar, flour, cinnamon. Add the rhubarb, apple, and strawberries or blueberries and the water. Mix and place into pan over the baked crust. Dot with butter.
  5. For the crumb topping, using the same bowl, mix together the flour, oats and salt; stir in sugar and spices. Cut in shortening until mixture is crumbly. Spread crumb topping over filling and cover the crust edges so the crust doesn't burn.
  6. Bake for 40 minutes or until fruit is tender.

It’s spring time and one of the first things from my garden is rhubarb, just ready for the cutting.  My family’s favorite rhubarb dessert is a recipe given to me by my mom.

I have a bad habit of getting my recipes looking “spilled on” when I bake.  So I typed all my favorite recipes that were in her hand writing, printed and inserted them into page protecting sheets.  This way, I can add more pages to my binder of recipes and also print more for the recipe binders that I gave to each of our children.  Now my mom’s recipes will be handed down to the future generations.

                                                  Rhubarb Torte

2 cups Flour                             1 cup Water
½ cup Oatmeal, quick             1 cup Sugar
1 cup Brown Sugar                  8 to 10 cups cut Rhubarb
¾ cup Butter, melted              1 cup Strawberries, sliced
3 Tbsp. Cornstarch                  ¾ cup Walnuts, chopped

Mix together flour, oatmeal, brown sugar, melted butter, & chopped walnuts (optional) for a crust.  Put into a 9 x 13 pan.  Save ¾ cup for topping.  Place cut (1/2 inch pieces) rhubarb & strawberries (small pieces) into pan.  In a large glass mixing bowl, stir cornstarch, water, & sugar together.  Place in microwave on high until thickened, but not lumpy.  Pour mixture over fruit.  Add remaining crumbs as a topping.

Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes to 1 hour until fruit is baked and crumbs are a light brown color.  Let cool and can be served with whipped cream.
