Poppy Patrols have described the poppy flower as an Elephant in the Flower Bed.
Breadseed poppies-arrangementbreadseed-poppy flowerBread Seed poppy-seedheads 1Poppy Seed Torte RecipeCan drying seedpods for a floral arrangement or sprinkling the poppy seeds on a muffin be a federal violation?

Seed producers became worried about being arrested for selling these flowers with the name, Opium Poppies.

So renaming them Breadseed Poppies made them sound safer from being questioned by the Poppy Patrols.

Eating a poppy seed dessert could possibly cause a drug test to be positive for opium.

I love the Seinfeld episode when Elaine eats some poppy seed muffins.  She needs a physical for a pending trip with her boss.  Her test comes back with a positive result for opium and her boss fires her.  This was one of seven episodes that happened in real life.

This federal offense was once compared to ripping the tags off of pillows and mattresses “under penalty of law.”

My husband’s Wisconsin relatives were one of many families that sold home grown poppy seeds.  The Poppy Patrol put a stop to many of these seed growing businesses.

Now we buy most poppyseeds for baking from foreign countries.

As a new bride, I believed the story about a successful marriage being directly linked to the husband’s contented stomach.

My mother-in-law shared with me, what has become our favorite poppyseed dessert.

Whether this poppyseed torte has contributed to a euphoria of contented married life for 50+ years could be debatable.  What do you think?

Welcome to my orchid growing hobby.  No, I don’t have a huge room for growing orchids.  When we became ‘Empty Nesters’ and moved to Utah, we downsized to fit our new lifestyle.  It would be nice if growing orchids was as easy as growing a bloomin’ onion, but the dry climate of Utah adds a special challenge.
Orchid Hobby
I’ve loved these unique flowers since my first prom date, when I received an orchid in my corsage.Orchid Hobby Room

My “orchid room” consists of a large plastic container, lined with heavy plastic to hold water. This plastic liner can then be easily replaced when it becomes dirty.  A plastic ceiling grate or grill was cut to fit on top of the container, so the plants can sit above the water and receive needed humidity.  Shining down on the flowers are two Fluorescent lights – one regular and one warm or grow light.  An automatic timer takes care of producing each day of artificial sunlight.Orchid Hobby close up

My flowering Phalaenopsis or moth orchid’s only care is a watering “weekly and weakly.”  This means the flowers are given water each week with a weak amount of orchid fertilizer.  Some growers recommend placing three ice cubes around each plant weekly, which is the equivalent of 1/4 cup of water.  Apparently the ice cubes melt so slowly that the temperature doesn’t affect the plant.

If the orchids are to receive light from a window sill, it’s recommended that the windows should be cleaned frequently.  Well, now you know why I don’t keep them on a window sill.

Our bucket list includes a quest to visit all 59 National Parks.  The Capitol Reef National Park is in an isolated area of Utah, which allows for a peaceful hiking experience.

It’s located on the Scenic Byway 12 route which travels through 3 national parks, 3 state parks, a national recreation area, and a national monument.  Yes, I will be linking these areas for your enjoyment in future story’s about our travels through the 124 miles of the Scenic Byway 12 route.

Capitol Reef natl park

The trails in the Capitol Reefs National Park took us up and around some cliffs for a panoramic view of the many spires, ridges and domes.  The park was named Capitol Reef, because the whitish sandstone domes resemble the Washington D.C. “Capitol” Building.  The “Reef” refers to the high uplifted ridge, which presented a considerable barrier to early settlers.

Capitol Reef red flower

I’m always amazed at how flowers manage to bloom in such inhospitable environments.

Capitol Reef white cactus flower

Capitol Reef purple flower

I would appreciate your helping me identify these cactus beauties for me.

I believe the red flower is the Crimson Hedgehog cactus, but the white cactus and the bluish lavender flowers are a mystery to me yet.

Our grandchildren love having us attend to their school performances.  Normally a flower bouquet is presented to a performer.  My grandkids are too young to appreciate receiving a flower bouquet and besides, they’re starving after singing and dancing.

Blog cookie bouquet A cookie bouquet brings big smiles and unfortunately, other little performers have wanted to trade their flowers for the “grandma-baked” cookies.

To shape a bouquet, I use solid color gift wrapping paper and cellophane that’s been shaped into a cone and then stapled on the bottom.

blog cookies 001 copy To make a Cookie Flower, melt chocolate chips and “glue” together two cookies with either a plastic straw or a wooden skewer inserted.

Also, the little performers won’t mind if you just insert some freshly baked cookies into the wrapping paper cone.  Be aware that grandchildren have fantastic memories and cookie bouquets will be expected for every performance!  I’ve added the recipe for the pictured cookies, as follows:
              Basketball Cookies
1 cup unsalted butter              2 eggs
1 cup oil                                      3 ½ cups flour
1 cup white sugar                     ½ tsp. salt
1 cup brown sugar                   1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. vanilla                              1 tsp. cream of tartar
Cream first 5 ingredients together.  Add eggs and beat.  Mix together dry ingredients and then stir into mixture.
Stir in:
1 cup quick cooking oatmeal   1 cup coconut
1 cup Rice Krispies                     2 cups chocolate chips
Drop by large tablespoonfuls  on ungreased cookie sheets.  Bake at 350 degrees for 10 to 12 minutes or until lightly brown.  Makes 60 large cookies, enough for the entire team.  Good keepers, too.

Check out what others are eating at Foodie Tuesday
