Minecraft is my grandson’s favorite computer game. Minecraft bug
What is Minecraft?  Kids use creative thinking, geometry, and some geology as they learn to build imaginative block structures.

Steve, Enderman, Diamond Axes, and grass were the characters and items requested for his birthday cake.

MineCraft Birthday Cake

Steve and Enderman were molded with Rice Krispie treats and covered with fondant.  The TNT is mini red Twizzlers.  Pretzels covered with chocolate pieces created the Diamond Axes.  Toasted coconut filled in the area and Kit Kat wafers added the bridges.  A Fruit Rollup had his name written with the Wilton edible writing pen.

I started with two chocolate cakes baked in 9 x 13 inch pans for the blocks.  Crushed Oreo cookies mixed with graham crackers were added to the frosted sides to look like dirt.  Green buttercreme frosting with a Wilton Grass tip, gave the blocks that grassy look.

Inspiration and helpful ideas came from this Coolest Birthday Cake website.  I’d love to hear about your clever cake ideas, since there will be more grandkid birthdays coming soon.

  1. Ooh now that is a cool cake! All the really good cake structures seem to be made with rice krispie treats. Guess they make good building blocks 🙂

  2. I love it!! My son loves it yoo. I bet he’s going to request it for his birthday, for sure. 😀

  3. I had not heard of Minecraft until reading this. I’m always so thrilled to hear when kids these days have constructive, learning computer games to play with vs the mindless-waste-of-time-when-they-should-be-out-playing-and-learning-life-skills-games. What an awesome delicious treat you made and I want one. So, do you do mail order, Neva?

  4. Neva your talent never ceases to amaze me! When I have grandchildren I can only hope that I will be one tenth of the super-gran that you are. Love your inspiring cakes, crafts and cooking.

    • Thanks for your kind words. I’m following my passion to enjoy all I can attempt to do and I love doing things with and for the grandkids.

  5. Have never played Minecraft, but that cake does look delicious!

    • I also had no clue what an Enderman was. This grandma had to do some big time research to figure out what these characters looked like.

  6. I can hear my kids and their friends playing Minecraft on the TV in the other room right now. My son read the biography of the Minecraft creator for his non-fiction free-choice book at school. In other words, I definitely have some Minecraft fans over here who would love this cake. Ah, my boy just wandered in, took a look at your picture, and declared it “cool.”

    • Well if your son declared the cake cool, I can breathe the consider my attempt at making the minecraft cake a success. Thanks for getting his response.

  7. No grandkids yet, so I’m clueless about Minecraft, but I know an amazing birthday cake when I see one. When I was growing up, our neighbor always made very creative cakes for her sons’ birthday parties. They must have been very memorable because I can still remember being delighted by her cakes and we’re talking 50 years ago. I’m afraid I have to first learn how to make regular garden variety cakes before I can think about trying something creative like you achieved.

  8. This is a fantastic idea 🙂 Btw I also just followed you on Facebook. Great blog! Looking forward to connect!

  9. What a great idea! 🙂 Customize and very creative.

  10. I don’t have kids yet so I haven’t heard of Minecraft
But I definitely like this fun cake that you made. Cute and adorable

    • I don’t have the talent to make professional looking cakes, but the grandkids love them. That’s the important end result.

  11. I have one very jealous 9 year old boy here. LOVES Minecraft and LOVES the cake. Great article!

    • These minecraft creatures had me stumped and now I know why he loves this craft. Thanks for the kind comment.
